The Gladiator

Gannets are black and white birds with yellow heads. They have long pointed wings and long bills. Their wingspan can reach up to 2 meters. Gannets hunt fish by diving into the sea from a relatively high position, around 30 meters, and diving down at speeds up to 100km/h. Their nostrils are located inside their mouth. Under their skin (head upto chest) are air sacs to cushion the impact of their diving. Gannets breed in coastal areas and islands. It takes 5 years to reach maturity. Offsprings are usually black on their first year. The whites and yellows start to show when they mature. There are generally 3 species of Gannets - found in North Atlantic, South Africa, and Australia/NZ. Gannets are territorial birds and they would defend their ground, especially during nesting season. I took this photo along the shores of Muriwai Beach, by the cliff on a prohibited and dangerous area. I had to take this shot when I saw these two Gannets fighting over their territory. Some tourists were looking at me as I go down the loose and very steep cliff. They were shouting, “That’s not a good idea… not a good idea!” I wasn’t able to bring my telephoto so I really had to shoot up close… I made it up to 2ft away from the gannets. After taking this shot, I moved a bit, and the entire colony flew… and I heard tourists complaining. Good luck on my next visa application!

Strasbourg

Strasbourg is the capital of Alsace Region, North Eastern France. It was an independent region in the 16th century. French owned it in 17th century. German got it in 19th century. After the defeat of Germans in WW1, it got its brief independence as French got it back in 1919 through the Treaty of Versailles. German got it back in WW2 (Fall of France 1940). French got it back in 1944. Strasbourg's Culture, Food and Architecture are mixed German and French due to this history. But one thing didn't change... the Christmas market/village tradition continued on since it started in 1570 despite the turnovers, wars, and religious conflicts.
